Ending a Lease Early

Are There Penalties for Ending a Lease Early?

Auto dealerships only make money on a lease if you make all of your payments through the end of the lease agreement. That is why leasing contracts have penalties for breaking a lease.

If you default on your lease, you may have to do one or more of the following:

  • Pay a fee for early termination
  • Make all leftover monthly payments
  • Pay additional fees to prepare the car for resale
  • Pay the "negative equity" on your vehicle, which is the difference between the lease amount and the current value of your vehicle

Before doing anything, however, take a look at your lease agreement to find out which of these penalties apply.
